Robservations: On Calico’s Escalade escapades

Oh, no. Not Calico.

That’s right, everyone’s favorite Blue Raider-turned-Titan (of course, he’s the only Blue Raider-turned-Titan we have) has had a spot of trouble with the law.

As reported in an area daily paper earlier this week, the Tennessee wideout has an upcoming court date to answer a charge of public indecency.

Calico was found earlier this month — at 2:30 in the morning, mind you — unclothed in the back of his Cadillac Escalade with an 18-year-old female, receiving a misdemeanor citation.

Now, to paraphrase the legendary Lewis Grizzard, there is a difference between “unclothed” and “nekkid.” If Calico and his “friend” had been “nekkid,” that would have meant they were “up to something.”

The third-year pro, who missed much of last season with injuries to both knees, was reported as laughing as he approached the police officer after he and his female companion covered themselves. Both Calico and his friend, naturally, denied any hanky-panky was going on.

Of course not. He is in training, after all.

I agree that in this day and age, when professional athletes spend as much time in court as on the court, there’s nothing much funny about these seemingly endless brushes with the law.

But the recent news about one of my alma mater’s most celebrated players, as well as one of the Titans’ big names and one of my fantasy football team’s stars, has elicited a number of emotions from this friendly neighborhood sports columnist, some of which appear below. Admittedly, a few of them might seem a bit funny. But this is no laughing matter, right? Yeah, right.

  • Shock: An NFL player in trouble with the law, and he’s neither a Raider nor a Cowboy? Weird.
  • More shock: A football player in Tennessee gets stopped by the cops, and he wasn’t a Vol? Unheard of.
  • Denial: No way this was a pro football player. Do you mean to tell me an NFL pro can afford an Escalade, and can’t afford a hotel room?
  • Passive acceptance: What’s the big deal? Can’t we at least be grateful a sports figure was found in a compromising position with someone of the opposite sex that was of age?
  • Public Relations anxiety: Well, at least there’s more publicity for Middle Tennessee State. If the old alma mater isn’t busy hiring a basketball coach without checking the job requirements, their alumni are getting caught with their pants down in the middle of Nashville.
  • Sympathy: Hey, Tyrone. I’ve got a replica of your jersey. You can borrow it, if you’re having trouble finding something to wear on your dates.
  • Empathy: Oh, bless his heart. I was changing clothes in my truck just the other day, so I know how embarrassing it can be to get caught in that situation.
  • Conspiracy theory: The Jacksonville Jaguars sabotaged Tyrone’s car so it would break down at 2:30 in the morning, then as he fell asleep waiting for a tow truck, they broke in, stripped him down, and planted a nude co-ed in the vehicle with him just in time for Metro’s finest to show up.

What? Don’t look at me like that! It could happen!
  • And finally, optimistic acceptance: Sure, he had to go to court. Sure, it’s shameful. But on the bright side, If he can wallow around in the back of that SUV, maybe those knees are starting to heal up.
