Blinding snow a traffic nightmare: Sunday afternoon marred by wrecks
|
While the Standard didn’t learn of any accidents involving serious injury, there were several mishaps which caused significant body damage to vehicles and many more which required the use of a wrecker service.
There was a two-vehicle collision on Nashville Highway which slowed traffic for about two hours. A two-car collision on the four-lane to Morrison left one of the vehicles badly damaged.
On Old Shelbyville Road, an SUV had to be pulled from a ditch. A car spun around and was left stranded on an embankment on Short Mountain Road, while the driver of a pickup in Viola lost control and needed the help of several motorists to push his truck back on the road.
The majority of the accidents took place outside McMinnville city limits. McMinnville Police Department reported using its four-wheel drive vehicles to patrol during the snow storm and said only two accidents occurred in the city limits Sunday.
Employees with the Warren County Highway Department put in a 12-hour day Sunday and worked another full day clearing the roads Monday. Assistant road superintendent Levie Glenn said most of the work Tuesday involved assessing damages, which were very few.
“We’ve been snow plowing and snow plowing,” said Glenn. “It was a pretty workable snow and it came at a good time with the holiday weekend. There wasn’t a lot of traffic out there on the roads Sunday and Monday.
“Everything looks in pretty good shape now. Even the rural roads are looking in good shape.”
Warren County schools will hold classes two hours late today. McMinnville’s water plant announced an official total of 3 inches of snow, although some outlying areas reported significantly more.
