Lady Saints top Centertown; Grundy, Coffee County win
Saturday night in the Warren Lodge Christmas Tournament DeKalb Middle School downed the Lady Warriors of Centertown 47-38. Grundy Middle defeated Cannon Eastside 22-15, and Coffee County Middle downed Warren County Eastside 27-9.
DeKalb County Middle School had too many weapons for the Lady Warriors to handle in the first half. Lady Saints Cynthia Woodward and Vanessa Ingram did most of the damage for DeKalb in the half. Woodward led DeKalb in the first period with seven of the Lady Saints’ 17 points in the period, including a 3-pointer in the opening minutes of the game.
Centertown had trouble moving the ball down court, but managed to hit for 11 points in the period with five coming from Brittany Frazier.
In the second period DeKalb still held the advantage as the Lady Saints out-rebounded the Warriors on their way to 10 points in the quarter. Centertown put seven points on the board but trailed by nine at the break.
The Lady Warriors turned up the defensive pressure in the third period. Pressure by Centertown held the Lady Saints to 13 points in the quarter, while Centertown narrowed the gap with 15 third-quarter points but trailed 40-33. In the final period DeKalb’s lead was too much to overcome with only six minutes to play. DeKalb outscored Centertown 7-5 in the fourth quarter as they advanced to semifinal action on Monday night.
Leading the Lady Warriors was Frazier with 17 points, Rebkah Tinsley hit for nine, Maria George added five, Kayla Medley hit for two and Jessica Elkins added one point. For the Lady Saints, Woodward led with 15 points, Ingram added 10, Shay Sullivan hit for seven, Sarah Wett had five, Felica Moore and Jessica Harvey scored four each, Keshia Poss and Lindsey Ervin added one point each.
• The Lady Bulldogs of Eastside didn’t have their “A” game against Coffee County Middle. Coffee County out-scored Eastside 8-1 in the first period and 11-2 in the second period for a 19-3 lead at the break. Coffee County’s defense created many turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs in the second half, which resulted in a scoreless third quarter for Eastside. The Lady Bulldogs did manage six points in the final period but it was too little too late. For Eastside, Becky Najera had three points, Lauren Henderson and Jasmine Wood had two points each. Amber Hillis and Jamie Vernon had one point each. For Coffee County, Lydia Diener and Whitney McWhorer had six points each. Taylor Baldwin had four, Paige Foster, Amy Henderson, Lena Manning, Jenna Philputt and Cortney Page had two points each and Emily Nettles added one point.
• In the Grundy Middle and Cannon County Eastside game, Grundy scored five in the first and eight in the second to take a 13-5 lead at the break. Cannon answered with six points in the third and four in the fourth but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Warriors won by seven. For Grundy County Brittany McDaniel had 11 points, Angel Smartt hit for five, Bridgett Smartt, Nikkie Smartt and Katie Northcutt had two points each. For Cannon County, McKenzie Solomon had nine points, Megan Cantrell hit for four and Candice Crouch added two points.
