WCMS wins two straight
Monday, the Warren County Middle School softball team picked up their second win in a row against Overton County 9-4 in a five inning game at the Civic Center field.
The win followed Saturday’s 12-8 win over Tullahoma, in a game played at WCHS.
In Monday’s game, Kayley Murray took the mound for WCMS allowing only five hits. Overton County picked up two of those hits in the first inning which scored one run. The Lady Pioneers sent four runners across the plate without a base hit in the inning. Two walks and then two hit batters scored two runs. Four more walks in the inning gave Warren County a 4-1 lead before Overton could get out of the inning.
In the second two errors and two walks given up by the Lady Pioneers pulled Overton County within one at 4-3 going into the bottom of the second. A walk, fielders choice and two stolen bases scored two for Warren County to make it 6-3.
In the third Overton scored one run on a walk and two base hits. The Lady Pioneers went down in order in the bottom of the third. Both teams went down sawing in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth Overton put two runners on with one out but the Lady Pioneers got out of the inning with solid defense making the plays. Even with a three run lead Warren County batted in the bottom of the fifth and added three more runs. A triple by Kayla Hubbard, a walk, a base hit by Murray and a double by Jessica Mullican gave Warren County the victory.
In the Saturday game, Tullahoma scored one run in the first off of two singles and an error. Warren County went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first.
Tullahoma added one run in the second when Pioneer pitcher Ashley McBee got the first batter to ground out then gave up a walk and a base hit as Tullahoma took a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning Warren County cut the lead in half. Cassie Rogers singled up the middle then Taylor Nunley doubled to right to score Rogers.
In the third, Tullahoma’s lead off batter drew a walk but was thrown out trying to steal. McBee recorded a strike out for the second out and then defense picked up the third out. The Lady Pioneers took the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs crossing the plate. Rogers singled to get things going for Warren County. Taylor Hennessee, Ashlee Malone and McBee all singled to give Warren County a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth both teams went in order. Tullahoma scored two runs in the fifth but the Lady Pioneers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Malone doubled, McBee singled and stole second. Mary Kate Fisher roped a double to center and Rogers also doubled to extend Warren County’s lead to 7-4.
Both teams would slug it out in the sixth. Tullahoma sent four runs across the plate to take a 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the inning. Warren County went to work at the plate when Mullican singled and Gracie Harvey drew a walk. Hennessee drew a walk to load the bases, Malone doubled to right to score Mullican and Harvey. McBee doubled and Rogers singled to give the Lady Pioneers the four-run victory.
