Cannon Eastside blasts WCMS girls in semis
Cannon County overpowered the Lady Pioneers in the first half with a solid offensive performance. Savannah Grandy put Cannon County out in front in the first period with five of their nine points. The Lady Pioneers had trouble with Eastside’s pressure defense and managed only four points in the quarter. Cannon County out-rebounded WCMS in the second period to help them to a 17-9 lead by halftime.
In the second half Cannon County used its bench to help extend its lead, posting 14 points in the third. Brittany Matthews hit for six points in the period to help keep the Lady Pioneers in the game, but WCMS still trailed by the end of the period 31-18.
The Lady Pioneers continued to struggle against Cannon County’s size in the paint as Eastside hit for 14 points in the final period. WCMS tried to make a late charge with 10 points, but time ran off the clock giving Cannon County the win.
Matthews led the Lady Pioneers with 12 points. Kasey Owens had four, LeAnne Smith and Kathy Hale had three points each. Katy Campen and Amanda Ferrell added two points each and Whitley Mathis added one point.
Cannon County was led by Grandy with nine points, followed by Hilary Howell and Candice Crouch with seven points each. Samantha Mullican, McKenzie Solomon and Megan Cantrell added six points each.
