Ernest L. Jones, 78
Cookeville resident and Wilson County native Ernest L. Jones, 78, died Aug. 26 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

A mechanic and owner of Ernie’s Gulf, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 99, he was the son of the late Sheily and Ova Traywick Jones; and was preceded in death by son, Orville Jones; brothers, Robert and Ben Jones; and sisters, Euna Fisher and Ollie Woodley.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Anita Jones of Cookeville; daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Cecil Phillips of Cookeville; brother, Claude Jones of Knoxville; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Ashley and Ernie Jones, Bobby and Billy Sykes.

Services were held Wednesday at Whitson Funeral Home Chapel in Cookeville with burial following at Spring Hill Cemetery in Sparta will full military honors.

Ernest E. (Gene) Meeks, 53
Altamont resident Ernest E. (Gene) Meeks, 53, died Aug. 27.

The son of the late Geitsi and Evie Bess Meeks, he was preceded in death by brother, Dalton Meeks.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Meeks; sons, Jeff, Travis and Adam Meeks of Altamont; daughter, Eugenia Baskin of Coalmont; brother, Earett Bess Jr. of Rock Island; sister, Sharon Young of Smithville; and grandchildren, Kendra, Darin, and Travis Haden Meeks, Steve and Randy Baskin.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Layne Funeral Home in Altamont with Howard Fults and Micah Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Altamont City Cemetery.

Layne Funeral Home of Altamont is in charge of arrangements.
