Mother faces $75,000 bond
Bond has been set at $75,000 for a teen accused of critically injuring her 1-month-old infant by shaking and throwing the baby earlier this year.
The defendant, Anias Ramirez, 17, is facing trial as an adult on aggravated child abuse charges. She was transferred from juvenile court due to the severity of the crime and could now face 15 to 25 years in prison if convicted.
She remains held in juvenile detention following her arrest this April for the injuries sustained by her son, Christian. Investigators say Ramirez admitted to shaking the baby and then throwing him onto a mattress. The incident reportedly caused severe brain injuries which may impair the young victim for life. The child has been taken from Ramirez’s custody and is being cared for at an undisclosed home.
Also charged with aggravated child abuse is Ramirez’s mother, Ivelliesee Machado Rodriguez, 34. Investigators say Rodriguez cared for baby Christian after he suffered the injuries but failed to seek medical attention for the infant. Prosecutors pointed out Rodriguez was a nurse’s aide and knew, or should have known, the baby was suffering brain injuries from the symptoms she observed. Rodriguez maintains she had no way of knowing what had happened to the child. Rodriguez remains held in lieu of $35,000 bond. Rodriguez entered a not guilty plea to her charges Friday.
