Boyd begins year with district win
Boyd kicked off its 2002 soccer season with a district win Monday, downing York 4-3 in a District 8-A matchup that featured a hat trick from newcomer Arne Alberts.
In the first half Boyd moved the ball down field and kept York’s defense on its heels. Arne Alberts scored first for Boyd off a penalty kick to go up 1-0. But York passed the ball downfield and was awarded a penalty kick of its own to make it a 1-1 game.
Jay Medley was busy at the goal as he rejected 14 shots in the first half. Boyd had 11 shots at goal in the first and went in at half-time 1-1.
“We played very well in the first half. The boys kept the field spread and we were able to make some good passes in the first half,” said coach Keri Hertwig.
York came out in the second half very aggressive on offense and fired a shot on goal to take a 2-1 lead early in the second half, but Alberts took another penalty kick midway in the second and tied the game 2-2.
The Broncos picked up the pace as the second half wore on, allowing Casey Hertwig to get loose and fire a shot past York’s goalie to give his Broncos the lead, 3-2.
York tried to put pressure on Boyd’s defense but never made a charge. Alberts took a pass from Clint Patterson and scored his third goal of the game to give Boyd a 4-2 advantage with three minutes left.
Boyd went into a defensive stand the last two minutes, and although York scored with two minutes left to make it 4-3, they had to watch as time ran off the clock as Boyd celebrated the victory.
Goalie Jay Medley had 29 saves in the game, with the Broncos taking 23 shots at goal.
“The guys played as a team tonight and we did a good job keeping pressure on York,” Hertwig said. “It’s always great to win that first game and now we have to get ready for Friendship Christian on Saturday.”
Saturday’s contest at Friendship Christian is set for noon.
