Lady Eagles clipped by DeKalb Middle

Another local team was knocked out of the Warren Lodge Christmas Tournament, as the Lady Saints of DeKalb County slipped past the Lady Eagles of Morrison 29-20 in Tuesday night action.

First-period action saw DeKalb take a small lead. Melita Pelham put Morrison on the board at the 5:49 mark of the opening period.

DeKalb County answered back with baskets from Shay Sullivan and Sarah West for a 3-2 lead.

Shelbie Tubbs gave the Lady Eagles their only lead of the game with 3:25 left in the period. The Lady Saints closed out the quarter with baskets from Sullivan and Sarah West for a 7-4 advantage by the end of the quarter.

West nailed a 3-pointer to open the second, and Morrison’s Brooke Bowman scored three points with 3:10 left in the half. But aggressive rebounding on both ends of the floor added seven more points to DeKalb’s lead before the half for a 17-9 lead at the break.

In the third period three back-to-back turnovers by Morrison helped the Lady Saints extend their lead with six unanswered points. Bowman hit Morrison’s four points in the period as the Lady Saints held a 25-13 lead by the end of the quarter.

Morrison tried to rally in the final period as Pelham, Bowman, Tubbs and Tia Curtis combined for the Lady Eagles’ seven points in the period. DeKalb slowed things down on offense, running time off the clock. The Lady Saints’ West and Victoria Bennett added one basket each to secure the win.

For the Lady Eagles, Bowman hit for 12 points, Tubbs hit for four, Pelham had three and Curtis added one point.

For DeKalb County, Sullivan led with 10, Moore hit for six, West had five, Cynthia Woodward, Kristina Stephens, Morgan Page and Bennett hit for two points each.

The Lady Saints were set to take on Sparta’s seventh-grade team Thursday night in the semifinal round.
