Lady Bronco soccer downed by Dragons: Bain scores both goals in home loss

Boyd’s Ashlei Bain watches as her shot bends the back of thenet during the first half of the Lady Broncos’ game against York Thursday. York goalkeeper Kyla Reagan, who lost the ball allowing Bain to score, looks on from the background.
Boyd Christian School’s soccer team fell in a home district contest Thursday afternoon, losing to York Institute by a 5-2 final.

While the Lady Broncos turned in a considerably strong defensive effort, as a result of York’s persistent presence on Boyd’s half of the field, a lack of offensive production continued to plague coach Gina Cleek’s squad.

“We made mistakes, but overall I was proud of the way we dealt with a big team, that has a lot of skill,” Cleek said after Thursday’s game.

“Our defense continued to pull together, but little things are costing us.

“If enough little things come together, it becomes a big thing — and it can cost you the ballgame.”

York’s first goal came on a fluke play 14 minutes into the contest.

The Lady Dragons’ Tricia Brewer sent a crossing pass in front of the Boyd goal, and in an attempt to block the pass Boyd’s Becca Reynolds inadvertently deflected the ball past Courtney Hard and into the Lady Bronco net.

Hard made a big diving save moments later, preventing another York score, but five minutes later Jessica Dungan found Brewer for York’s second goal of the contest.

Just a moment later, Boyd’s Ashlei Bain found herself on a breakaway toward the York goal, and Lady Dragon keeper Kyla Reagan’s attempt to smother the ball caused it to pop loose, allowing Bain to capitalize and put the home squad on the board.

York’s Brooke Layne had a point-blank shot stopped by Hard just before the half, but just a few moments later got the ball back, and lofted the ball over Hard’s head to give her team a 3-1 halftime lead.

Layne struck again in the opening minutes of the second half, putting in another high shot to make it a 4-1 game, but Bain struck again for Boyd, scoring to halve her team’s deficit.

In the closing moments of the game, Layne was taken down in the box by Boyd’s Emily Newby, and rifled a penalty kick past Hard for the final margin of victory.

The Lady Broncos managed just three shots, while Hard turned in six saves. York had just one save, and took 11 shots on goal.

Boyd took on Mt. Juliet Christian Saturday afternoon, and plays host to Jackson County Monday at home.
