Third and final Nashville jail escapee recaptured
Billy Leo Potts Jr., 39, was caught by the U.S. Marshals Service and Metro Police after authorities received a tip that a suspicious man was sitting on a retaining wall in the Music Row area. Authorities said Potts was ready to go back to jail.
“He said he was tired and wanted to return to jail,” said Tony Crawford with the Marshals Service.
Earlier Tuesday, the girlfriend of one captured jail escapee was accused of helping him evade authorities, police said.
Kimetha R. Gray, 48, of Nashville, was charged with being an accessory after the escape and giving police false information. She was being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.
Police say Gray aided William Clay Bohanan — one of three men who escaped Saturday from a special needs cell at the medium- and maximum-security jail in Nashville.
Bohanan, 40, Berl Keith McKinnie, 38, and Potts fled by squeezing through an 8-inch gap onto the roof and using bed sheets to descend three stories.
The men stuffed newspapers into jail-issued orange jumpsuits and left the dummies in their beds.
McKinnie was caught by the Marshals Service in north Nashville on Monday night, about two miles from the jail.
Bohanan — awaiting trial on homicide and arson related to a 1993 fire in which two children died — was captured Monday afternoon in a wooded area about 15 miles east of the jail, officials said.
McKinnie faced charges related to a police pursuit in a stolen car. He also is a suspect in a homicide case and wanted for an aggravated sexual assault in Chicago.
Potts faced charges including robbery and theft.
Police say Gray at first denied any knowledge of the escape, then later admitted helping Bohanan.
Gray picked up Bohanan early Sunday, took him to her home and prepared a backpack containing clothes, a radio, blanket and insect repellant, police say.
She tried to call a friend to further assist, then drove Bohanan to a wooded area and agreed to meet him later, police said.
