Lady Pioneer JV falls 57-46
Warren County’s junior varsity girls had a chance to take the spotlight Friday night, as they opened the Papa John’s Thanksgiving classic with a matchup against the Riverdale JV.
Unfortunately for the homestanding Lady Pioneers, turnovers proved costly throughout the contest, as Riverdale built an early lead on its way to a 57-46 victory.
Up 7-0 early, the Lady Warrior JV posted 13 points to the Lady Pioneers’ seven in the first period, then out-scored their hosts 16-10 in the second, despite a pair of 3-pointers from WCHS sophomore guard McKenna Rhea, including back-to-back treys midway through the period which cut the RHS lead to 21-17. But Riverdale scored the final eight points of the half, and led 29-17 at the break.
The Lady Pioneers picked up their intensity in the second half, and trimmed their deficit by a point in the third quarter. But Riverdale still maintained a 38-26 lead heading into the game’s final period.
Rhea lit the Lady Warriors up from the perimeter in the fourth, nailing three 3-pointers in the game’s final eight minutes, but time ran out on the Lady Pioneers as Riverdale held on for the win.
Rhea led the way for WCHS with 16 points, while Heather Frazier and Amanda Locke had eight each.
Kara Youngblood scored six, with Brittany Brewer and Alysa Lankford posting three apiece. Lauren Patterson rounded out the Lady Pioneers’ totals with two points.
Riverdale was led by Autumn Haynes with 12 points, while Jessica Whittens had 10.
