Joe Mason Stewart, 73
McMinnville resident and DeKalb County native Joe Mason Stewart, 73, died Nov. 27 at River Park Hospital after a lengthy illness.
An educator serving as superintendent of schools in Warren County and longtime basketball coach, he was a member of the Methodist Church and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
The son of Euin Ezra and Lucille West Stewart, he is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Herman Medley of McMinnville; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Richard E. and Sandra Stewart of Huntsville, Ala.; nephews, Barry and Jackie Medley of McMinnville, Mike Stewart of Dallas, Texas, and Brent Stewart of Atlanta, Ga.; nieces, Melissa Herndon of Birmingham, Ala., and Sherry Stewart of Los Angeles, Calif.; special niece, Kate Medley of McMinnville, and special friends, Mattie Stalcup and Faye Greene.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at High’s Chapel with Robert Case and Nestor Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory. Active pallbearers are Derwood Stewart, Frank Stewart, Paul Stewart, Clarence Foster, Dewey Duke, Jack Slatton, Fred Greene and Edwin Partin. All former basketball players, and others, are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers including Jimmy Earle, Bobby Haile, Rad C. Spivey, Bobby Newby, Troy Jones, Donald Prater, George Bolding, James Bennett, Bob Bonner, Sam Boyd, Pedro Paz, Edd Cantrell, Jane Allison, Ann Eades, Andy Jacobs, Keith Hollingsworth, John Swafford, George Morris, Ozle Allen, David Smartt, Oliver Bess, Keith Mayfield, Betty Stanley Scott, Jane Ingle, Joleta Reynolds, Wilma Cathey, Katherine Holland, Mary Sanders, Carol Locke, Novel Webb Jr., Jack Evins, Billy Webb, Jack Parker, Bass Estes and Billie Burton.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service today at High’s. Memorials may be made to the Good Neighbor Fund at First United Methodist Church in McMinnville, Tenn., 37110.

Walter H. Hayworth, 70
McMinnville resident and Warren County native Walter H. Hayworth, 70, died Nov. 25 at Metro General Hospital in Nashville after an extended illness.
A nursery worker, he was the son of Allen and Annie Ruth Winton Hayworth.
He is survived by daughter, Patricia Joyce Baugh of Nashville; grandchildren, Antonio Davis, Trivonda Baugh and Betty Jean Baugh, all of Nashville; and great-granddaughter, Tanaja Baugh of Nashville.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Gardens of Memory. A wake will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at High’s.

Virgie Elizabeth Knowles, 86
McMinnville resident and DeKalb County native Virgie Elizabeth Knowles, 86, died Nov. 26 at Raintree Manor after a lingering illness.
A machine operator with Formfit Rogers and a member of the Church of God, she was the daughter of Thomas Claude and Ella Mai Sullens Cantrell; and was preceded in death by her husband, Ovel Burchel (Burch) Knowles.
She is survived by sisters, Irene Frazier of Clarksville, Thelma Mangrum of Gallatin and Frances Whitaker of Rockford, Ill.; and brothers, James and Ray Cantrell of Nashville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at High Funeral Home with Rex Boles officiating. Burial will follow at DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

Walter Ed Cooke, 76
McMinnville resident and Blairstown, N.J., native Walter Ed Cooke, 76, died Nov. 25 at NHC after a short illness.
A farmer, member of Centertown United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and American Legion, he served his county in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
The son of the late Walter and Ruth Wildrick Cooke; he was preceded in death by sons, Michael and William Cooke; daughter, Sharon Cooke; and grandson, Ronald Thomas Trinneer Jr.
He is survived by daughters, Terri King of Centertown, Joanne Mendenhall of Indiana, Candy Teliha of McMinnville, Kathy Tilmon of Pennsylvania and Debra Cooke of Florida; sons, David Cooke of McMinnville and John Cooke of Smithville; sisters, Elizabeth Shotwell and Adonis Dean, both of New Jersey; and brothers, Donald Cooke of Pennsylvania and Robert Cooke of Virginia; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodbury Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Father Gene Foreman officiating. Burial will follow at Centertown Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Woodbury Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
