Pioneer tennis team ‘nets’ its 10th victory

Warren County High School’s boys tennis team reached double digits in the win column, as the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers split a district match with White County Monday in Sparta.

The Pioneers defeated the Warriors 5-2, improving to 10-4 on the year, while the Lady Pioneers dropped to 3-11 with a tough 6-1 loss.

Jacob Wilson topped the Warriors’ Devin Howser 8-1 in the No. 1 singles slot, while Blake Hitchcock was an 8-4 winner over Garrison Holloway. Travis Gay downed Michael Allen 8-5 at No. 5 for the team’s other singles win.

Bobby Rampp, playing No. 3, fell short 8-6 to Ross Jolley, while Russell Hitchcock dropped an 8-4 match to Ty McKee at No. 4.

In doubles action, Gay and Blake Hitchcock edged Holloway and McKee 9-7, while Rampp and Russell Hitchcock defeated Howser and Jolley 8-5.

The Lady Pioneers’ lone win came at No. 2 singles, where Katy Campen defeated Lacy Loftis 8-6. Elisha Ray fell 8-2 at No. 1, while Allison Maxwell fell 8-4 at No. 3 and Kristen Bouldin lost 8-6 at No. 4 singles.

Ray and Maxwell played what coach David Dunlap described as “their best doubles match of the year,” falling just short to Loftis and Rachael Redmond. The match went to a tie-breaker, which the Lady Pioneer duo lost 7-5 to fall by a final score of 9-8.

Campen and Bouldin teamed at No. 2 doubles, falling to Stacey Rogers and Mary Ross 8-4.
