Free car wash set for Saturday

In an effort to dispel the old notion that nothing is free, the General Sessions Court and Juvenile Court of Warren County will be offering a free car wash this Saturday.
‘We want everyone to come out and get themselves a free car wash,’ said event coordinator Carla Reed of Community Probation Services. ‘This is for anyone who wants to sit back and let someone else do the work for a change, in this case, a free car wash. All you have to do is show up with your car or truck and we’ll take care of the rest.’
The free car wash is a continuation of a tradition started several years ago by Judge Larry Ross who wanted adults and juveniles convicted of minor violations to ‘work up a sweat’ in making up for either their indiscretions behind the wheel or their minor brushes with the law.
‘This is a way for them to give back to the community,’ said Judge Ross, indicating washing cars in the hot sun gives people who violated the law a chance to reflect on what they did to get them there.
Much of the workforce is made up of juvenile offenders, most there due to speeding tickets and other moving violations. Their work is supervised, and often assisted, by members of the court system and probation officers.
‘This is all supervised so they will do a good job,’ Reed said. ‘And this costs nothing to the taxpayers because everything we are using is being donated by various businesses.’
The car wash will be held this Saturday, June 28, at its traditional location at Caney Fork Electric on New Smithville Highway across from Bi-Lo. It will begin at 8 a.m. and continue into the afternoon until the flow of cars stops. No advance reservations are necessary as it’s first come, first serve.
