WCHS routed at Riverdale-Warriors pull away in 2nd half
The Pioneers’ quest for a second straight district win came up short Tuesday night in Murfreesboro, as Riverdale pulled steadily away in the second half on the way to a 60-39 win.
With the loss the Pioneers fell to 1-9 in the District 7-AAA standings, and dropped to 4-16 on the season. Riverdale improved to 6-17 overall and 4-7 in league play.
Coming off their first district win in nearly three years, the Pioneers held their own with their hosts early in Tuesday’s tilt, with a late Riverdale basket helping them close the first period with a 15-12 lead. Although the second quarter was nearly as close, the Pioneers couldn’t close the gap, and entered halftime down by seven points at 29-22.
The Warriors seized momentum after intermission, however, out-scoring the Pioneers 21-13 in the third quarter and sealing the win in the fourth by holding WCHS to just four points while tacking 10 more on to their own totals.
Joey Lee, who scored 17 in his team’s first win over Warren County, led the Warriors once again, coming off the bench to post 16 points. Blake Howard added 14, while Michael Young tossed in 13 of his own.
The Pioneers, who travel back to Murfreesboro to face Siegel tonight, were led by a 19-point night from Chris Weitzel and eight points from Donta Weir.
WCHS is scheduled to be at home Saturday night, taking on White County in a game originally scheduled for Jan. 22.
