Cougars claw way to narrow win over Boyd-Broncos still winless in 9-A
Tuesday night in Murfreesboro the Broncos of Boyd Christian entered their game against Middle Tennessee Christian with a 0-6 District 9-A record, while the Cougars had two wins in district play. MTCS added another win to its district record by downing the Broncos 53-50.
The Broncos got off to a slow start in the opening period. Casey Myers, Cole Stubblefield, Tyler Hillis and Lance Chandler netted one basket each. The Cougars worked the other end of the floor for 14 points with the help of a 3-pointer from Taylor Beckham.
The Broncos bounced back in the second period turning up the heat on both ends of the floor. Defensively Boyd held the advantage on the boards, which held the Cougars to 13 points. Stubblefield netted seven points in the period with the help of a 3-pointer. Hillis added three baskets and Myers hit the boards for four points. By the end of the first half the Broncos had fought their way back to tie the game up at 27-27.
Boyd’s dominance continued in the third period as the Broncos out-scored the Cougars 16-12. Hillis netted a pair of 3-pointers and a basket in the paint. Myers pitched in four points, while Stubblefield and Austin Young had two points each. By the end of the period, Boyd held a 43-39 advantage.
The Broncos struggled in the final period on offense, turning over the ball eight times down the stretch. Boyd was held to seven points in the period, while the Cougars put 14 points on the board to take the three point victory.
‘We played solid during the first three quarters, but when it counted in the fourth we just couldn’t finish,’ said coach Chris Sullens.
‘We did a great job on the boards on both ends of the floor. In the final period we made too many mistakes on offense and when you turn the ball over that many times late in the game you’re not going to win.’
For Boyd, Hillis had 19, Myers hit for 12, Stubblefield had 11, Chandler hit for four, Mitchell Young and Austin Young had two points each.
Beckham hit for 17, Tyler Watson had nine, Andrew Kuhn struck for eight and Logan Siler had seven to lead the Cougars in scoring.
Boyd will celebrate homecoming Saturday night with a game against Webb.
