Most everyone is familiar with the Cinderella story, but what they may not realize is that, like many fables, there are different versions of this tale in other countries. One of the most intriguing is “Vasalisa! The Russian Cinderella.”

And fortunately for Warren County, Magness Library is proud to present this wonderful story in a performance by puppeteer and theater artist Pamella O’Connor. The show is this Thursday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Caney Fork Electric Community Room. Admission is free and the public is invited.

The program is a juried selection of the 1999 Piccolo Spoleto Theatre Series in Charleston, S.C. According to program information, “This intriguing Russian folktale combines the art forms of puppetry and storytelling to create a warm and intimate theatrical experience. Vasalisa is a young girl who is bequeathed a “magic” doll by her dying mother to guide her when she is lost or unsure. When her father marries again, she is sent deep into the woods by her wicked stepfamily to seek fire from the mythical witch Baba Yaga. Vasalisa passes the tests set before her and in the process learns to trust herself.”

O’Connor has been a professional theatre artist for more than 25 years. As an Equity Actress she has performed regional theaters around the country including Indiana Repertory, Arkansas Repertory and Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre.

As a puppeteer, she has toured the United States and Europe working with DRAK Theatre, Czech Republic, Theatre Im Wind, Germany, the Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta, Janie Geiser’s Obie and UNIMA award winning JOT-TAY Theatre, as well as her own p.o’connor puppets.

“Vasalisa! The Russian Cinderella” is a show suitable for the whole family that will also serve as an introduction to another culture and literary tradition.
