Jacobs: WCHS officials confident Smith the best choice for program
It may have taken a few more weeks than some would have liked, but WCHS athletic director Andy Jacobs and the athletic committee came to a unanimous decision Monday afternoon.
The hiring of Ryan Smith as the Pioneers’ head basketball coach was reached after the field of 18 applicants was narrowed down to five, and then two finalists.
“It was a tough selection with both coaches coming very highly recommended,” Jacos said. “We really had no time limit, but wanted to get someone named as soon as possible. It took longer than expected, but we really wanted to make sure we had the right hire.
“We wanted to make sure that the selection that was made was in the best interest of Warren County basketball. Yes, it took longer than we anticipated, but we weren’t going to rush into anything. I feel like, along with Mr. (James) Bennett, Dr. (Jerry) Hale and the search committee, we made the right selection.”
When asked if the recent situation with outgoing coach Chris Turner had any effect on the committee or felt pressured by the school board in choosing the next coach, Jacobs replied it did not.
“We do the same background checks on everyone, and that had nothing to do with waiting this long to announce our new coach,” he said. “The events with coach Turner were beyond his control, and it was very unfortunate.
“When it came down to the final two candidates we took some extra time to ensure we made the right choice for Warren County. We had two quality coaches, but it came down to Smith’s plans for basketball here in Warren County.
“We were impressed with his interview. He wants to build a winning program and he wants to stay here and be committed. We’re wanting stability back in the program, and I believe Smith will get the job done.”
