Sports Briefs: Lady Pioneer Basketball Camp

Head Lady Pioneer basketball coach Ann Eades and her staff along with the Lady Pioneer basketball team will hold their annual basketball camp June 20-23 from 8-10 a.m. at the Warren County High School. The camp is for girls in grades 3-9 at a cost of $40 per camper or $30 if you have more than one family member attending camp. Fundamental instructions and individual competitions are part of this camps activities. The purpose of the camp is provide high quality instruction in the basics of basketball. Wide World of Sports
The McMinnville Parks and Recreation would like to announce they are now organizing the Civic Center Wide World of Sports for the week of April 4-8. Kids ages 8-16 are invited to sign up for a week full of fun. Events such as the Home Run Derby, Quarterback Challenge and Soccer Shutout will be taking place all week. Cost of admission to Civic Center will cover the event. For more information contact Justin Scott at 473-1212.

Newtown Softball Sign-Ups
There will be a meeting April 7 at 6 p.m. at the Newtown ballfield for anyone interested in putting a team in the league. If you can’t make the meeting please call Bobby Christain at 473-1028 or Frank Southard at 668-3355.

ISA “Early Bird”
An Early Bird softball tournament following Independent Softball Association rules will be held Saturday, April 9, at the Warren County Fairgrounds.
Entry fee is $160, plus a $25 sanction fee, and teams must provided their own .44-core, ISA-stamped balls. The tournament field will be divided into “D” (2 home runs) and “E” (0 home runs) classes, with any homer over the limit ending the inning.

Fairgrounds field rental
Anyone interested in renting the fairgrounds ball fields is asked to contact Mary Roller between 5 and 9 p.m. at (931) 212-3223 or (931) 474-2263. Price is $15 for a two-hour session.

Volleyball Tournament
The McMinnville Parks and Recreation will sponsoring a six-on-six open volleyball tournament April 9 starting at 9 a.m. at the Civic Center. Entry fee is $80 per team, with a maximum of 10 players per team. Deadline for registration is April 4. Awards will be given out to first place team and also second place if enough teams enter. This will be an open tournament and everyone is encouraged to play. For more information contact Justin Scott at 473-1212.

Wildcat 5K and fun run
The inaugural Wildcat 5K and one-mile fun run is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, with proceeds benefiting the Dibrell Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization.
The race begins at 8 a.m., rain or shine, in front of Dibrell school. The course will be an “out-and-back” down Mike Muncey Rd., traveling south towards McMinnville, then back again.
Registration forms for this year’s race are now available at Delores’ Market, the McMinnville Civic Center and the Southern Standard office. Forms may also be obtained by logging on to the race Website, www.wildcat5k.com.
The deadline for pre-registration for the race is Monday, April 18. Race entries will also be accepted on Saturday, April 23, at the race check-in at the entrance to Dibrell Elementary.
The entry fee is a donation of at least $10 for pre-registration and $15 for those who register after April 18. Proceeds benefit the Dibrell PTO.

Ping-Pong tournament
Sign up and start practicing now for the McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department’s Ping-Pong tournament, which will be held at the McMinnville Civic Center on Saturday, April 23, beginning at 9 a.m.
Entry fee is $8 per person for singles divisions and $4 per person for doubles. Forms are available at the Civic Center. The divisions are singles (mixed), Men’s doubles, and Mixed doubles. The singles division will be divided into either competitive or recreational play. Trophies will be given to top competitors.
Registration is now open, so please register early. The deadline for registering is April 18. For more information, come by or call the Civic Center at 473-1212.

Fast-pitch softball tourney
All middle school fast-pitch softball teams are invited to a tournament April 15-17 at the Cane Creek SportsPlex in Cookeville. The tournament will be divided into divisions for small and large schools, with SEAA sanction and rules applying.
Entry fee is $175, with four games guaranteed.
Team awards for first through fourth in each division will be awarded, as well as individual trophies for each player on the first- and second-place teams and an all-tourney team.

Bass Tournaments at Cotten’s Marina
Bass tournaments are held at Cotten’s Marina from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Saturday, and everyone is welcome. Entry fee is $20 per person and you need to be signed in by 6:45 a.m. For more information contact Tim Prater at 939-2690.

Centertown ball sign-ups
Registration for Centertown Ball Park will be April 1-2 from 6-8 p.m. on Friday night and 8-11 a.m. Saturday morning at the Centertown Community Center (next to the school).
Breakout of the leagues will be Training (3-4 year olds), T-Ball (5-7), Coach Pitch (8-10), Preteen Softball (11-13), Early Teen Softball (14-16), and Late Teen Softball (17-19), with ages as of July 1, 2005.

USSSA World Qualifying
The Early Bird Classic for men’s class D&E will be held April 1-2 at the McMinnville Fairgrounds. Entry fee is $175 plus sanction fee. Furnish your own balls 44 or 47 core, USSSA stamped. There will be a three home run limit and awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place if 10 or more teams enter. All-Star Basketball Camp
Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All-Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only. Boys and Girls age 10-19 are eligible to apply.
Past participants include: Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison. Players from 50 states and 17 foreign countries attended the 2004 camp. College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American team. Camp locations include Lebanon, Tenn., as well as several locations in other states.
