Two-day open auditions set for Steel Magnolias

The Community Playhouse is pleased to announce open auditions for the hit comedy/drama “Steel Magnolias,” written by Robert Harling and directed by Stuart Fulkerson.

Auditions will be held at the South Jackson Civic Center in Tullahoma at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2; and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3. Parts are available for six women ranging in age from 18 to mid-60s. Audition materials will be provided by the director. Those wishing to audition should bring a recent wallet sized photo.

The story takes place in small Louisiana town in a carport turned beauty parlor where the ladies of the town gather. The lives of the six women of the play are reflected through their friendship and interactions at the beauty shop, Truvy’s Beauty Spot. There they share gossip, argue, complain about the worthless men in their lives, and deal with loss and tragedy.

The blossom of a real magnolia lasts only a short time. As the name of the play suggests, the ladies survive the blows of life through a hard humor that sustains them. As beauty shop owner Truvy remarks, ‘Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.”
