Ivan forces shuffling of soccer's schedule

Warren County’s Catherine Hill battles a Cookeville player for the ball during their game last week.
Football wasn’t the only sport disrupted by Hurricane Ivan this week.

Ivan took its toll on soccer games Thursday night, and even some scheduled for Saturday.

The Lady Pioneers were scheduled to take on White County Thursday night on the road, and then be at home Saturday for a game against Pope John Paul II.

“You never like to have to reschedule games, but Ivan may have helped us,” said coach Keith Hamilton. “We got beat up pretty good against Cookeville on Tuesday. Hillary Templeton took a hard shot to the jaw, Alex Smartt turned her ankle, and several other girls are bruised and still sore. Sometimes you need a little time off to rest and recover, and that’s exactly what Ivan has given us.”

After all the rain had saturated the ground on Thursday and Friday, Hamilton decided to cancel Saturday’s game, as well.

“Pope John high school had several girls injured, and they lost their star player to an ACL last week,” he noted. “So I talked it over with their coach, and we both decided to cancel the game Saturday for a little extra rest.

“We won’t make that game up, and the game against Livingston Academy last week which the rain from Hurricane Frances canceled will not be rescheduled, either.

“This gets us through fair week, and hopefully the girls will be more mentally ready for the next three games, which are district matchups. As a coach you would like to see the girls work out and keep active with ball drills, but I think rest will help this team.”

The game against White County will be played Monday, Sept. 27, at Sparta and should start at 3:30 p.m. The Lady Pioneers will be in the heart of their District 7-AAA schedule as they take on Siegel at home on Tuesday and then hit the road on Thursday to face Riverdale.
