Hundreds of students gathered at school flag poles across the county Wednesday to pray as part of the international prayer event See You at the Pole.

Started in 1990 in Burlson, Tex., See You at the Pole has become an international grass-roots prayer event in which teens from around the world gather at school flag poles on the same day to intercede for their leaders, schools and families.

Last year, a reported 2 million teens in all 50 states and on six continents participated in the See You at the Pole activities.

“See You at the Pole is not political. It’s not a protest to get prayer in school. It’s held to worship God in one special moment all around the world,” said First Baptist Church youth minister Jon Kent, who helped to organize the event.

This year’s event theme was “Ascend: Clean Hands. Pure Heart,” which takes its name from Psalm 24:3-4 which explains that only those with clean hands and a pure heart may enter into God’s presence.

See You at the Pole is a student-initiated, student-led movement. Senior Tanya Best, president of the Christ Extreme Club, organized events at Warren County High School.

She said about 50 students gathered at the school’s flag pole at 7 a.m. Wednesday. After an opening prayer and song, a short devotional was held, followed by a large group prayer in which a number of students led their peers in praying for the school’s students and teachers. Each of the school’s principals was also prayed for by name. Afterwards, the students broke into small groups and prayed for various concerns.

“I think it went real well,” Best said.

Following the morning’s festivities, a See You at the Pole Rally was held Wednesday night at Northside Baptist Church.

Approximately 150 students from area churches of various denominations were on hand to enjoy the music of The Dustin Burke Band and the message of Christian speaker J.T. Turner.
