Program gives parents tips for feisty children
Parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but Morrison Elementary School will give parents the next best thing as they offer the parent-empowering program “Loving Solutions” beginning next week.
Loving Solutions is a nationally known curriculum developed by the authors of The Parent Project, a successful program offered by the school system several times in recent years for parents of difficult teens. The six-week course will focus on providing parents and families behavior management strategies and communication skills with which to improve the quality of parent-child interactions.
Loving Solutions is aimed at parents with difficult younger children ages 5 to 10.
Specifically, the course provides guidelines for parents to determine when children need a “rule,” what issues are negotiable, when parents can negotiate, how to use timeout properly to gain substantial behavior change, how to get children to cooperate with household chores, to get along better with siblings and improve school success. The program also addresses the needs of children with attention deficit disorder.
The course will be taught by school psychologist Linda Langham and Morrison school counselor Barbara George, both of whom are certified by The Parent Project.
It was noted Loving Solutions is open to all parents who wish to attend, and not just those whose children attend Morrison. School officials also encourage grandparents and all adult family members who help in caring for children to attend.
While the course is free, there is a workbook fee of $20, which will be collected during the first session.
Loving Solutions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday nights beginning Sept. 20 and ending Oct. 25 at Morrison Elementary. For more information or to register, call the school at 635-2512.
