Back to School Movie Night to feature ‘Finding Nemo’

Leadership Warren, under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce, will be sponsoring its annual Back to School Movie Night on Saturday, Aug. 14, with the festivities beginning at 6 p.m. and the movie should start at 8 p.m. The movie is free and this year’s family friendly film will be the popular animated Pixar feature “Finding Nemo.”

The local organization has been sponsoring the event for several years.

“This will be our fifth annual Back to School Movie Night,” said Leadership Warren’s Alicea Weddington.

Though originally scheduled for Aug. 7, a conflict with another local event downtown resulted in the movie night being rescheduled to its new date of Aug. 14, according to Weddington.

Weddington say the event has become a popular downtown attraction.

“It’s been quite successful,” she said. “Our audience has obviously been growing. Last year we had around 2,500 people.”

As in the past, the movie will be shown on a screen attached to the side of Cumberland Bank. Though the first movie nights utilized VHS, the event has now gone high-tech with a high-resolution DVD player and digital projector system.

“It’s a much better picture,” Weddington said.

In addition to the movie, there will be food, games, prizes and activities. A prize will be awarded for the Best Dressed Family with family members decked out in tropical-luau style attire. There will be a Pick-up-a-Fish Game with the proceeds going to the Magness Library “Adopt-a-Book” program.

There will also be a Finding Nemo-themed coloring contest for the kids, with prizes for various age groups. Coloring contest sheets may be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce, Magness Library and Security Federal locations. Or you can clip the coloring contest entry featured below this story in today’s Southern Standard.

At the pickup locations there will be instructions as to when the sheets need to be turned back in at collection boxes in the same locations.

So bring your lawn chairs, quilts, etc., and join Leadership Warren for a night of family fun and entertainment. All food vendors and activities will benefit local non-profit clubs and organizations.

“We’d love for everyone to come and join us,” said Weddington.
