Feb. 26: Hosta Society to offer special presentation
Hottovy is nationally and internationally recognized for his study and propagating of a vast line of plant materials. His talk will address the world of shade-loving helleborus, or Lenten roses, a unique perennial that blooms in the garden from December-April. The beautiful hellebore blooms not only add color to the winter garden, but also accent with dark green glossy foliage for year-round garden interest.
Hottovy’s talk promises to be informational as well as provide up-to-date care and culture of helleborus. He was formerly employed with Monrovia Nursery in California. In 1999, Hottovy utilized his 25 years of experience in the commercial nursery business by starting his own business. Beyond Green LLC, located in Dayton, Ore., is a source for new and hard-to-find plants.
Hottovy specializes in propagation by cutting, seeding, grafting/budding, dividing, layering and tissue culture. He has propagated more than 2,000 varieties of perennials, shrubs, trees, conifers, vines, ferns, ground covers, grasses, herbs and topiaries. Current projects under way are propagation of hardy deciduous magnolias, Siberian iris, agapanthus, trilliums, hardy ferns, hardy cyclamen, specialty hardy ferns and specialty conifers.
Beyond Green LLC has commercially sponsored the introduction of the helleborus “Mardi Gras Parade” line and a double hellebore named “Party Dress” hybridized by Charles Price and Glen Withey of Seattle. Hottovy also has introduced his own plant selections of wisteria sinensis, cedrus deodara, agapanthus, pinus mugo, salix hybrid, armeria maritima, nyssa sylvatica and sedum as well as hostas.
