Most people don’t care enough to pick presidential candidate
For the Warren County residents who took the time to vote in Tuesday’s primaries, the reaction was virtually unanimous: Where are all the people? That was certainly the reaction of several Standard employees who returned from the polls Tuesday to say they were the only voters at their respective precincts.
In the end, 25 percent of registered Warren County voters took the time to cast their ballots. The sad part is those numbers are glowing — almost double — when compared to the statewide figure of 13 percent.
It should be stressed the statewide figure of 13 percent is just 13 percent of the registered voters. That doesn’t include the residents who never register to vote in the first place.
What makes the lack of interest at the polls even more puzzling is Tuesday’s primary is helping to determine the Democratic candidate for president. We’re not talking about an obscure local office few people know much about. It’s a vote with a direct impact on the United States president.
Keep in mind there is no charge to vote. The time requirements are usually around five minutes and the wait is at an all-time low thanks to a generous, and now widely used, early voting period.
The only factor required to vote is just a touch of concern. It’s an unfortunate commentary more people in this country don’t care enough to help decide our nation’s top leader.
