Cantrell cousins reunite at Midway Community Center

There were 68 descendants of Cleveland A. Cantrell, 1850-1930, and Sarah E. Lane Cantrell, 1853-1925, who met for the 14th reunion of the Cantrell cousins. The event took place Oct. 19 at Midway Community Center.

Serving as hostess, Ann Haley Hutchings had decorated the center using a colorful autumn theme. She was assisted by daughter, Martha Hutchings and cousins Carol Barrett and Bertlin Glenn.

Following the church hour, relatives began arriving with various palate-pleasing food dishes for the meal. Hutchings welcomed the group and asked for a moment of silence to honor the memory of those who had passed away since the previous reunion. Names mentioned included Magnolia Adcock, Logan Herriman, Mary Ellen Cantrell and Mary Ella Cantrell. Prayer was worded by Bertlin Glenn.

A photograph of Great-grandfather Cleveland Cantrell was displayed beside one of his books entitled “Religious Denominations of the World” that had been printed in 1871. An array of photographs from previous reunions were also exhibited.

Relatives from Albany, Ky., Ozark, Ala., and Skipperville, Ala., joined many from Warren County. In order to get better acquainted, descendants of the children of Cleveland and Sarah Elizabeth were asked to stand as the names of their parents were read aloud. Bertha Cantrell Glenn, daughter of the late Myrtle Cantrell Glenn, had the most family member present.

Hutchings had drawn a family tree with ancestors on the proper limbs, ready to be filled in with current names and dates. These were given to each family present.

Tom Miller showed pages of information about family members retrieved from the Internet and explained how easy one can log on for family research.

Levi Glenn auctioned items brought to support the Potter Cemetery where many family members have been laid to rest. Mildred Glenn serves as secretary and treasurer for the group.

The family’s next annual reunion is scheduled for the third Sunday on October 2004 at Midway Community Center.
