WCMS remains perfect, now 3-0
Warren County Middle School’s football team remained perfect on the 2003 season with a 29-14 victory over Monterey Thursday night.
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 3-0, and extended their winning streak — which stretches back into the 2002 campaign — to six straight games.
Justin Bouldin led the way for WCMS with 111 yards and two touchdowns, including a 40-yard run on the Pioneers’ first play from scrimmage. The touchdown was set up after Monterey fumbled on its first play of the game.
Quarterback Kyle Mullican helped the Pioneers build a 14-0 lead, as he connected with Chase Officer for a 21-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter. Another Bouldin run, this time from 27 yards out, gave WCMS a 21-0 lead by the halftime break.
“We’re putting points on the board, and a lot of that credit has to go to our defense,” said WCMS coach Jeff Watson. “We made an adjustment to our defensive set early, and it shut them down.
“The defense helped set the tone, and gave us great field position, and we took advantage of some big plays to build a lead.”
The Pioneers’ final score of the game came thanks to that defense, as Mullican picked off a Monterey pass and returned it for a touchdown.
With a comfortable edge, Watson opted to clear his bench in the second half. Monterey — which had been held to just 14 yards for most of the game — pulled off a pair of big scoring plays late in the contest, finding the end zone on a 68-yard run and a 56-yard pass.
In addition to Bouldin’s production, the Pioneers got 41 yards on 13 carries from Grant Tate and 29 more on four carries from C.J. Scoggins. Mullican completed two of three passes for 24 yards.
Other defensive standouts included Taylor Holton, who had an interception to end the first half, and Cody Adcock, who recovered a fumble.
The Pioneers will be off this week, and return to action Thursday, Sept. 11, on the road against Cookeville’s Avery Trace Middle School.
