Obituary Report for August 31, 2003
McMinnville resident and Dickson County native Jerry Wayne Brown, 58, died unexpectedly Aug. 29 at his home.
A retired member of the U.S. Army, serving for 24 years and in the Korean War, he was a member of the VFW and Moose Lodge.
The son of Connie Rogers of McMinnville and the late Williard Brown, he is survived by brothers, Pat, Bernie, Clayton and Mac Brown, all of McMinnville; several nieces and nephews.
Services were Saturday at High’s Chapel with Paul Gunn officiating. Burial followed at Smyrna Cemetery with military graveside rites administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.
High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Timothy James Mears, 45
McMinnville resident and Detroit, Mich., native Timothy James Mears, 45, died unexpectedly Aug. 30 at River Park Hospital.
The son of James and Margia Hood Mears, he is survived by his wife, Linda Mears; son, James Mears of Manchester; daughter, Alisha Mears of Trenton, Mich.; stepsons, Matthew Carpenter of Wayne, Mich., Jeremiah Carpenter of Georgia, David and Sean Carpenter, both of Michigan; stepdaughter, Jessica Gray of Michigan; five grandchildren; and brothers, Charles Holland and Joseph Urban of McMinnville.
Arrangements were incomplete at press time.

J.B. Hobbs, 67
Sparta resident and Warren County native J.B. Hobbs, 67, died Aug. 28 at NHC in Sparta.
The son of the late Henry and Callie Sarah Ellen Gooch Hobbs, he was preceded in death by son, Jason Balaine Hobbs; brothers, Charles Eugene Hobbs and James Claudine Hobbs.
He is survived by his wife, Francis Marie Green Hobbs; son, Daniel (Danny) Hobbs of Florida; grandson, Corey Daniel Hobbs of Florida; sister, Maggie Josephine McKenzie of McMinnville; brothers, William Arlis Hobbs of Collinwood, Henry Lee Hobbs of Athens, Ala. and Paul Wayne Hobbs of McMinnville.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta with James Haynes officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory.

Mary Ellen Altherr Rogers, 76
Rock Island resident and Jackson, Ohio, native Mary Ellen Altherr Rogers, 76, died Aug. 27 at her home.
A homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Cecil V. and Zelia Montgomery Altherr; and was preceded in death by brothers, Cecil Altherr, Frederick Altherr and Raymond Altherr; and sister, Geraldine Morgan.
She is survived by her husband, Marion Thomas (M.T.) Rogers; son, Raymond Rogers of Rock Island; son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Missy Rogers of Lewisburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Rosalind and Sal Aiello of Kent, Wash., Ellen and Nick Nichols of Waynesville, N.C., Jo and David Basham of Rock Island, Susie Roger and David Williams, Pam and Gentry Mathis, all of McMinnville; grandchildren, Brandy and Kyle Cox, and Angie Rogers, all of McMinnville, Mary Beth Rogers of Nashville, Chrisy Aiello and Marie (Petey) Aiello, all of Kent, Wash., Jack, Devin, Dylan and Scarlett Rogers, all of Centertown; brother, Harold Altherr of Napoleon, Ohio; sister, Rosalind Dickman of McMinnville; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Shellsford Cemetery with Marcus Rogers and Harold Altherr officiating. Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until time of service Sunday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home.
