Commission says yes to WastAway

PRYOR
The Warren County Commission voted unanimously Monday to proceed with plans to begin using WastAway to dispose of the county’s solid waste.

WastAway, a subsidiary of local firm Bouldin & Lawson, has developed a method of recycling solid waste into a material suitable for a number of applications.

Several of the commissioners expressed concerns about what form the agreement would take and requested that contracts be drawn up and checked by the county’s attorney.

“We haven’t committed ourselves wholly to this,” said Commissioner Wayne Pryor. “The only thing I’m asking in my motion is that the entire commission approve this venture, to proceed with it and get more information.”

County Executive Carol Hamblen then informed the commission any formal documents would indeed have to come back before the full commission for approval.

But even the commissioners who expressed concern were quick to convey their enthusiasm.

“I’m all for it,” said Commissioner Herb Wright. “I just want to be sure we dot all our i’s and cross all our t’s.”

After further discussion, commissioners voted unanimously to have the Health and Welfare Committee move forward with the WastAway project.

The commission also passed a resolution to enter into an agreement with the city of McMinnville to permit the county to house one ambulance at the city’s No. 2 Fire Station on North Chancery. This agreement would allow the county’s ambulances to respond in a more timely manner to calls in that area. The resolution called for the county to provide remuneration in the amount of $1 per year for this privilege.

The commission also voted to accept the resignation of Warren County Veteran Service Officer Winfred E. Casey, who had served in that capacity for the last 19-1/2 years.

In his letter, addressed to Hamblen, Casey said, “I appreciate very much all the help and cooperation from you and your office and also from all the officials of the Warren County Court.”

The commission voted unanimously to accept the resignation and then appointed a new Veteran’s Service officer, James Green, who will take over the responsibilities of the office after Mr. Casey’s retirement, effective June 30.

Barbara Scott was appointed to the Warren County Historical Commission due to the fact one member had moved out of the county. This passed unanimously.

The commission heard requests to issue beer permits to Keith Raney and Gary King of K & R Enterprises, and Delores Glenn of Smithville Highway Stop & Go. Both permits passed unanimously.
