Boyd Christian School’s soccer season ended with a heartbreaker Tuesday night, as the Broncos fell to Davidson Academy 1-0 in the first round of the Region 5 A-AA Tournament in Nash-ville.

The Broncos, who finished the 2002 campaign with a record of 6-5-2, came into the tourney as the No. 2 seed out of District 9, while the Bears came in as the champions of District 10 A-AA.

The game’s lone goal came in the second half, as the Bears managed to swarm around the goal and deflect a shot past Boyd goalkeeper Jay Medley.

While Boyd turned up its intensity to try and knot the score, The tough Davidson Academy defense kept the Broncos from attacking the goal, and DA’s keeper was able to bat away Boyd’s shot attempts as the final moments of the game wound down.

“It was a hard-fought game,” coach Keri Hertwig said. “The boys played well, we just came up a little short.”

The Broncos’ Jay Medley turned away 29 Davidson Academy shots, while Boyd was held to just six shots on goal, many of which came in the closing moments of the contest.

Although the season ended on a down note, Hertwig said her team took great strides during just its third year of existence.

“I’m so proud of the boys,” she said. “They played so well together this year, and they played as a team.

“We’re looking forward to going out next year and making it even farther in the postseason.”
