Varsity netters swept by Riverdale
The Pioneer tennis team tangled with the Riverdale Warriors Friday afternoon at the Civic Center Complex, falling in both the boys (4-5) and girls (2-7) matches.
No. 1-seeded Doug Roberts defeated Riverdale’s John Rone 8-2, R.J. Pierce fell 5-8 against Brandon Haynes at the No. 2 spot. Travis Powers lost his third seeded match 3-8 against Eric Darko, Tyler Boyd picked up a win over Justin Harney 8-3, Jacob Wilson fell 8-9(2) against Dustin Royal and Terry Tilton picked up another Pioneer win over Punit Patel 8-5.
In doubles Roberts and Cameron Gonder lost to Rone and Haynes 1-8, Powers and Wilson fell to Darko and Harney 8-9 (5) and Boyd and Tilton defeated Royal and Dalwadai 8-5.
For the girls Tina Vucic won the only singles match for WCHS, defeating Kelly Wood 8-1. Mo Zwemer lost to Jhain Pounds 5-8, Kayla Blair lost to Paula Senboutasath 0-8, Mary Beth Gribble fell to Tomoko Ito 0-8, April Kirby fell to Michelle Love 2-8 and Emily Hobbs fell 0-8 to Consolute Vmayria.
In doubles Vucic and Zwemer teamed to defeat Pounds and Love 8-2, Gribble and Rhea fell 0-8 against Woods and Ito. Kirby and Hobbs fell 1-8 against Senboutasath and Logan.
