Cougars maul Broncos 67-27
A lack of offense in the first three periods proved to be fatal for the Broncos Tuesday night, as they fell at home to Middle Tennessee Christain 67-27.
The Cougars hit the scoreboard first. but a 3-pointer by Dillion Childers put Boyd on the right track in the opening minutes of the first period.
But the Broncos’ offense would sputter as MTCS went on two scoring runs. The first came at the five-minute mark, when the Cougars hit for six unanswered points, and again with two minutes left in the period with seven unanswered. Dustin Curtis closed out the period with a basket for Boyd, but the Broncos trailed 15-7.
The Bronco offense had trouble finding any type of good look at the basket in the second period. Clint Patterson started things off with a 3-pointer, but the Broncos would go cold and add just two more points in the period.
MTCS started to pull away mid-way through the second quarter and by the end of the period — after hitting for 23 points — held a 38-11 lead at half-time.
In the third period the Cougars used their height advantage to break the game wide open. The Broncos’ only point in the period came from Curtis who hit the front end of a one-and-one. The Cougars scored at will, including a two-handed dunk by Matt Gentry. By the end of the period the Cougars held a 53-12 lead.
In the final period Patterson finally got things going for Boyd by hitting three 3-pointers. But the Cougars kept pounding the boards hitting for 14 points to secure the win.
For Boyd, Patterson led with nine points. Casey Hertwig hit for eight, Matthew Hancock had four, Curtis and Childers added three points each.
