Siegel hands Pioneers 13th 7-AAA loss
MURFREESBORO — A little over a month ago, the Pioneer basketball team dropped a heart-breaker to the visiting Siegel Stars.
Tuesday night, the two squads met again — this time, at the Stars’ house, where Siegel proved to be a most inhospitable host.
Led by a 23-point night from Keith Ramsey, Siegel’s first-year program assured itself of a successful first season, as it rolled to an 84-61 victory over the Pioneers.
With the win, Siegel improved to 14-10 overall and 6-7 in District 7-AAA play. Warren County, which lost its fifth straight, fell to 0-13 in the league standings and 7-16 overall.
Siegel went to work early, posting a 10-4 lead on the way to a 19-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Ramsey took over in the second, scoring 12 points in the period to help his team to a 39-24 halftime edge.
Up 60-43 through three quarters, the Stars were sent to the free-throw line 10 times in the fourth, connecting on 16 of their 20 attempts to seal the win.
While Ramsey’s 23 highlighted the Stars’ efforts, Siegel used a balanced attack to amass their lofty point total. Every player who got into the game scored, with 15 points coming off the bench.
Jimmy Oden contributed 16 points, including a buzzer-beater from behind the halfcourt stripe which ended the game’s first quarter. Darius Roper had 11, while Chuck Avent scored seven points.
Reese Bishop led the Pioneers with 12, as he returned to the starting lineup after missing Friday night’s game at Cookeville for disciplinary reasons. Brandon Adcock and Kyle Thompson had 10 points apiece, Todd Gilley had eight, and Josh Nunley netted four. Ross Marlowe chipped in three points, while Brooks Majors, Warren Swann and Ben Dunn scored two each.
The Pioneers wrap up their district schedule tonight, with a road game against Lebanon. Earlier this year, WCHS surrendered its highest point total of the season to the Blue Devils, suffering an 88-56 loss.
