Lady Pioneers snap four-game skid
|
Led by double-digit efforts from Leanne Pelham and Vanessa Cornelius, the Lady Pioneers snapped a four-game losing streak with a lopsided league victory, downing the Siegel Lady Stars 59-37.
Pelham scored 13 points, while Cornelius added 11 — including nine in the second quarter — to the winning tally. With the victory, the Lady Pioneers improved to 5-8 in district play (12-9 overall), while Siegel dropped to 1-12 in the league standings and 6-18 overall.
Siegel held its own early, much as it did in its first meeting with the Lady Pioneers. The Lady Stars found themselves down 8-3 after a Whitney Pelham basket in the first quarter, but bounced back to cut the lead to 8-7 before a 4-0 WCHS run closed the period.
Cornelius lit up the Lady Stars from the paint in the second, scoring four baskets and adding a free throw to help her team take a lead which grew to as many as 11 (22-11) and stood at 28-19 by intermission.
Warren County’s defense tightened up in the third quarter, holding its hosts to just six points while posting 17 on the other end for a 45-25 third-quarter lead. Coach Ann Eades was able to clear her bench in the fourth, and the Lady Pioneers still out-scored the Lady Stars, posting 14 points to Siegel’s 12 to nail down the win.
In addition to Pelham’s 13 and Cornelius’ 11, the Lady Pioneers got seven points each from Whitney Pelham, Leah Cunningham, Heather Frazier and Alyssa Lankford. Tia Williams netted four, McKenna Rhea had two and Amanda Locke tossed in a free throw to round out the winning effort.
Tikedra Locke was the lone bright spot for the Lady Stars, as she netted 16 points. Megan Williams had seven.
