Centertown girls clip WCMS

Sweeping the county’s seventh- and eighth-grade basketball titles was no easy task for Centertown’s girls, but the Lady Warriors accomplished that feat Monday night, as they edged Warren County Middle’s seventh-graders 39-34.

Trailing 25-18 at the end of the third quarter, Centertown’s Brittany Frazier took over the game in the fourth, scoring all 21 of her squad’s points in the period.

A Frazier 3-pointer tied the game at 30-30, but Warren County Middle’s girls, who entered the tournament as its third seed and reached the finals with an upset win over Morrison, had fight left in them.

Tiffany Long, who led her squad with 21 points, hit the front end of a pair of free throws to trip Centertown’s lead to 32-31, but missed the second shot and the opportunity to re-tie the score.

Missed opportunities at the line were a running theme for the Lady Pioneers, who connected on just 11 of their 37 attempts from the charity stripe. Long accounted for 30 of those attempts, making just nine.

On the other end of the court, Frazier helped seal the win for her Lady Warriors, hitting seven of eight shots from the free-throw line during the game’s final minute.

A Cassie Wanamaker 3-pointer with 28 seconds to play made things interesting, as it cut the score to 36-34 in Centertown’s favor, but Linnsay Williamson’s 3-point attempt was blocked on WCMS’s next possession, and Frazier sealed the win at the line.

Long finished with 21 points to lead WCMS, while Jessie Paz and Wanamaker had four each. Macy Broom added three, while Jessica Mullican rounded out the runner-up effort with two points.

Frazier’s huge fourth quarter helped her to a 29-point night, while Rebekah Tinsley and George each chipped in four points. Hyatt and Katie Roller added a free throw apiece.
