Boyd girls win, boys fall short

Friday night Boyd Christian’s high school basketball teams traveled Mt. Juliet Christian for a matchup with the Saints and Lady Saints.

The Broncos had to settle for a split as the Lady Broncos downed the Lady Saints 43-31 and Mt. Juliet defeated the Broncos 74-63.

The Lady Broncos came out of the gate fast and furious in the first period. Boyd went right to work down in the paint, with Amanda Prater and Tabitha King helping the Broncos to 11 points in the quarter. The Lady Saints struggled offensively with six points as Boyd’s defense did a solid job of keeping pressure on the ball.

Both teams stumbled on offense in the second period. The Lady Broncos scored four points in the period, while the Lady Saints hit for six, but Boyd held a 15-12 lead at the break.

The Lady Broncos took control of the game in the second half. Boyd out-scored Mt. Juliet 10-6 in the third and 18-13 in the fourth for the 12-point victory.

In the boys game both teams battled for four quarters, but a 20-10 lead for the Saints in the first period made it hard for the Broncos to recover. In the second period Clint Patterson and Casey Hertwig got things going offensively for the Broncos as Boyd hit for 22 points, while holding Mt. Juliet to 20. At the half Boyd trailed by eight at 40-32.

The two teams swapped baskets in the third period with 18 points each. In the final period Mt. Juliet went inside to Calen Morriston, who hit for seven points in the period as the Saints escaped a late Boyd rally.
