James Cecil McDowell Sr., 89
McMinnville resident and Warren County native James Cecil McDowell Sr., 89, died Aug. 25 at Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro after a brief illness.
An employee of Burroughs-Ross-Colville and a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, he was the son of R.D. and Nervie Ann Worthington McDowell; and was preceded in death by daughter, Linda Ann McDowell; brothers, Clyde and Clarence McDowell; and sisters, Beulah Eula Collier and Pearl Cope.
He is survived by son, J.C. McDowell Jr. of McMinnville; daughter and son-in-law, Janette Sue and Gerald McBride of Williamsburg, Ind.; grandchildren and their spouses, Leigh and Missi McBride of Pendleton, Ind., Cecilia an Rusty Norman of Modoc, Ind.; three grandchildren, Noah McBride, J.C. and Nick Norman.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at High’s Chapel with Ron Martin and Albert Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery.

Loyde Houston (Slim) Stembridge, 74
McMinnville resident and Warren County native Loyde Houston (Slim) Stembridge, 74, died Aug. 26 at Raintree Manor after an extended illness.
A nursery worker with Vaughn’s Nursery, he was the son of the late Sam Stembridge and Bertie Delong Webb, and was preceded in death by stepfather, John Webb; stepmother, Mary Sue Harrell Stembridge; sister, Joy Stembridge; and granddaughter, Charity Stembridge.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Stembridge of Rock Island; daughter, Vivian Stembridge Merriman of McMinnville; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Melinda Stembridge, Eddie and Margaret Stembridge, all of McMinnville; brothers, Wade Stembridge of Ohio, Jo Bob Stembridge of Smithville, Harrell, Clarence, James, Frank, Carl and Russell Stembridge, all of Woodbury; sisters, Brenda Redmon and Teresa Elkins of McMinnville, Bernice Wimberly and Carolyn Burcks of Woodbury, and Mary Elizabeth Green of Georgia; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at High’s Chapel with burial following at New Union Cemetery in DeKalb County. Visitation began Tuesday at High’s.

Mildred Louise Cagle, 70
McMinnville resident and Warren County native Mildred Louise Cagle, 70, died Aug. 26 at her home after an extended illness.
A seamstress with McMinnville Garment Factory and a member of Rolling Acres Brethren in Christ Church, she was the daughter of Ernest Alvin and Estell L. Webster O’Neal; she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey M. Cagle in 1997; sisters, Clara Dixson and Ruth Morton; brothers, Lee, Buddy and Dewey Edward King O’Neal; and granddaughter, Tina Marie Bouldin.
She is survived by son, Donald McCoy Cagle of McMinnville; daughters, Joyce Bouldin of McMinnville and Martha Davis of Rock Island; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at High’s Chapel with Ralph Tucker officiating. Burial will follow at Hebron Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service today at High’s.

George (Bud) Hankal, 73
McMinnville resident and Greenville native George (Bud) Hankal, 73, died Aug. 26 at River Park Hospital.
Retired from the electronic and repair business after 15 years of service and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, he was the son of Clyde Rivers Hankal; and was preceded in death by brother, Henry Hankal.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Stan Hankal of Morrison, David and Penny Hankal, Paul and Tammy Hankal, all of Rock Island, Jeffrey Green of McMinnville; daughters and son-in-law, Jenny and Joe Montgomery, and Cathy Hankal, all of McMinnville; grandchildren, Myrandia Lake, Clay, Taylor, Kristen, Tessa and Jade Hankal, Sina Neal, Cameron and Lee Montgomery and Taggart Huttchson; and step-granddaughter, Heather Lawrence.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at High’s Chapel with Steve Breedlove officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory with military graveside rites administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service today at High’s.

Rebecca Louise Sparkman Kell, 70
Doyle resident and Van Buren County native Rebecca Louise Sparkman Kell, 70, died Aug. 26 at River Park Hospital after an extended illness.
A program assistant with the U.T. Agriculture Extension Office in Van Buren County and a member of the Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late L.D. and Elvie Parker Sparkman, and was preceded in death by her stepmother, Gladys Sparkman.
She is survived by her husband, L.C. Kell; daughter, Jo Ann Kell of Doyle; son, David Kell of Doyle; sister, Grace Kell of Rock Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held Tuesday at High’s Chapel with Garvin Haley and Kenneth Clayton officiating. Burial followed at Mt. View Cemetery.

Albert Lee Moffitt, 50
McMinnville resident and Flat Rock, Mich., native Albert Lee Moffitt, 50, died Aug. 26 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.
A nurseryman, he was the son of Zora McDowell of McMinnville and the late Burger Moffitt; and was preceded in death by sister, Minnie Ann Young.
He is survived by niece, Angela Lawson of McMinnville; nephews, Ronnie Melton of North Carolina and Mark Melton of Smithville; and several great-nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at High’s Chapel with Danny Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Hills Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today at High’s. Donations may be made to the Albert Moffitt Fund to cover expenses.

Danny Lee Vaughn, 62
Knoxville resident and Claiborn County native Danny Lee Vaughn, 62, died Aug. 24 at UT Memorial Hospital in Knoxville.
A laborer in the construction, building and re-modeling industries, he was the son of the late George D. and Ruth Bell Earls Vaughn; and was preceded in death by sisters, Minnie Pendleton and Helen Marie Vaughn and brother, Eugene Vaughn.
He is survived by son, Thomas Vaughn of Knoxville; three grandchildren, brothers, James Vaughn of McMinnville and Carl David Vaughn of Crossville; sisters, Patricia Sweeton of McMinnville and Mary Taylor of Short Mountain; nieces and nephews, Tony, Terry, Kenny and Angela Pendleton, Diane Ross and Charles Taylor.
Services were held Tuesday at High’s Chapel with Greg Sweeton officiating. Burial followed at Liberty Cemetery.
