Ready for a luau: Fund-raiser benefits Chamber addition
While not on the Pacific shores of Hawaii, the “Party of the Summer” on the banks of Harvest Farms Lake promises to bring a Polynesian air to the Nursery Capital, and all for a good cause.

Proceeds from the luau, to be held at the Inn at Harvest Farms Lake July 11 from 6 to 9 p.m., will go to the Chamber of Commerce fund for its new building. Expansion of the Chamber building at Court Square is presently under way; however, more funds are needed to complete the project. At present, about $300,000 has been raised for the expansion, meaning another $100,000 needs to be raised to cover the complete costs.

“This is something we’re doing we think will be really neat,” said Chamber representative Susan Barrett. “Fund-raiser or not, this is something where everyone can come out and have a good time.

“We’re making progress. Slowly but surely, downtown is looking better and the new Chamber building is a big part of that. When it’s complete, it will add a lot to downtown. You can really see all the progress that’s taken place over the last three years.”

Those on hand can expect to be served by local politicians, who have volunteered their services. There will also be a contest for best costume, limbo dancing and other contests with a Polynesian flair.

Cost for the event is $25 per person and those attending are urged to dress in Hawaiian clothing. Tickets may be picked up at the Chamber building or by calling 473-6611. Those who plan to come are encouraged to get their tickets by July 8 so organizers will have an idea as to how many people to expect.
