Seniors’ home finale:Broncos fall in final home game

Boyd, which honored seniors Arne Alberts, Corey Beets and John Woodlee, held their own through the first half, but the second half was all Wildcats as they dropped the Broncos to 5-3-2. Boyd remains in second place in the District 8-A standings.
“Livingston is a good team and they have a lot of people they can bring in and keep fresh legs out there,” said coach Keri Hertwig. “That hurt us in the second half, because we only have two subs to bring in to get our starters some rest.
“We played a good first half, but just got a little tired in the second.”
In the first half Boyd matched up very well with the (9-1) Wildcats and played a very physical defensive game. The Broncos took the first shot on goal, with Alberts hooking the ball wide right. Livingston started to turn up the offensive pressure, and with 15 minutes left in the half Colin Smith fired a shot just past the outstretched arms of Bronco goalie Jay Medley to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
In the final four minutes of the half Boyd came up with a big defensive stand. Livingston fired six shots at goal but the Broncos defense turned them away, sending the teams into halftime tied 1-1.
“We are playing very good on defense but we have to put more pressure on them from the offensive end,” Hertwig noted at halftime. “We have only two shots at goal in the first half and have to find away to get more open shots.”
In the second half the Wildcats came out very aggressively, and with nine minutes off the clock scored their second goal. Two minutes later the Wildcats struck again to take a 3-0 lead.
Boyd tried to answer with some good passing, and got the ball downfield for a shot, but the Wildcats’ goalie turned the Broncos away. Livingston went back on offense and with 20 minutes off the clock struck for its fourth goal.
The Broncos never let up, but started to wear down a bit as they watched Livingston bring in fresh players off the bench the entire game.
With 12 minutes left in the game Livingston hit for its fifth goal of the game and secured the victory.
The Wildcats had 36 shots on goal while Boyd was held to just six. The Broncos were slated to travel to White County Thursday, and hit the road for their season finale Saturday, when they are scheduled to face Mt. Juliet Christian at noon. The District 8-A tournament is scheduled for May 2-9.
