WCHS volleyball holds tryouts for ’05 squad

Fisher cut the Lady Pioneer roster down to 15 after the two-hour tryout. The girls went through a series of drills to test their skill level. The morning started with a little stretching, then an overhead passing drill followed by a bump passing drill. Each player went through eight rounds of serving before the day ended.
After grading each player on a points system, Fisher made his final decision.
“We had a good workout, and the group showed a lot of promise,” he said, adding the addition of the WCMS volleyball program has made for an easier tryout process at the high school.
“Over the last couple of years I’ve cut the tryouts down to one day, due to the program at the middle school,” he explained. “Before we had a feeder program this was the first time most of these kids have touched a volleyball. It took a lot longer to evaluate the players and determine their potential.
“Now we have kids coming up with some experience in the game, which has made our program here at the high school more competitive.”
Fisher described this team as having a good balance of upper- and lowerclassmen, all of whom have several years of playing experience.
“The last three years we have had a solid group of freshmen, and this year is no exception,” he said. “Our five seniors were the first group to go through the middle school program as they started in the eighth grade. These girls have five years of volleyball experience, and that’s a big positive for the program.”
The team will work on conditioning through the summer, and Fisher noted will have open gym for those who would like to get in some playing time this summer.
