Sports Briefs: WCHS boys basketball
Players are asked to bring their report cards to tryouts, and must have either had a physical during the last year, the results of which are on file, or must have a parent sign a consent form before trying out.
The freshman team will practice May 31-June 2, from 12:30-2 p.m. each day, and from June 6-11 from 10:30 until noon. They’ll attend camp at Tennessee Tech June 22-24.

Triathlon volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed to assist with the annual McMinnville City Triathlon, which will be held Saturday, June 25.

USSSA Summer Slam
A men’s D & E women’s C &D state softball qualifier will be held Saturday, May 28, at the Warren County fairgrounds fields. Deadline to enter is Wednesday, May 25, at 9 p.m.

Fast Pitch Softball Camp
There will be a softball camp held at the Warren County High School softball field May 31-June 3 from 9 a.m. until noon. Cost of the camp is $40 per person, which includes T-shirt. For more information contact coach David Upton at 668-2730.
SEAA Youth softball tournaments
The Warren County Showdown will be played at the fairgrounds and at Morrison June 4. Boys teams ages 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u and 19u at the fairgrounds, as well as girls 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u and 19u at Morrison, will all have divisions. Entry fee is $150, or $90 for girls coach-pitch 8-under. The tournament is SEAA sanctioned. For more information contact Mike Mason at (931) 761-5878.

Kids fishing derby
McMinnville Parks and Recreation and Wal-Mart would like to announce that they are co-sponsoring “The Wal-Mart Kids All-American Fishing Derby” Saturday, June 18, at Riverfront Park from 8 a.m. until noon.
Registration will begin at 7:30 the day of the event. There will be four age groups competing: Under 4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16. Prizes will be given for the longest, heaviest and first fish caught in each age group. There will also be a casting contest and door prizes given throughout the day.

WCHS girls soccer evaluations
Coach Keith Hamilton will hold evaluation for new soccer players for the girls high school team on Friday, May 27, at 5 p.m. at the high school field. This is for girls that did not play on the high school team last year. Bring your shoes and shin guards and a parent to evaluations. USSSA World Qualifier
American Cellular and Verizon Wireless will be sponsoring a world qualifier softball tournament for men’s Class D and E teams, as well as women’s C and D teams, will be held at the Warren County Church League fields June 18. Entry fee is $175, plus a sanction fee. Teams must furnish their own 44 or 47 core, USSSA-stamped softballs. Deadline to enter is June 15 at 7 p.m., and the field will be limited to 20 teams.
Awards will depend on the number of teams entered. If 10 or more teams play, 10 all-tournament awards will be presented. American Cellular will also be presenting awards throughout the day.

NSA softball tourneys
The 22nd annual NSA Jim Beam Classic will be held May 28-30 in Nashville for men’s B, C, D and E teams, as well as women’s teams. A co-ed tourney will be held on Sunday, May 29.

Basketball camp at West Elementary
Jennifer Wilson will be holding her annual basketball camp for players in grades 1-6 May 30 through June 2 at the West Elementary gym.
Cost is $35 per camper, and includes a camp T-shirt.
The camp for players in grades 1-3 will be from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. each day, while those in grades 4-6 will have camp from 9:30 until 11 a.m.

WCMS softball tryouts
Warren County Middle School will be having softball tryouts this summer, beginning with sign-ups on June 20 and continuing through June 23. Tryouts will be from 4-6 p.m. each day at the Warren County High School softball field.
Any parent of a player who will be out of town during the tryout period may contact Walker at 473-6557 or 273-6772 to arrange a makeup tryout.
TYBA coach-pitch Spring Fling
This Warren County Youth Baseball and Softball Association will host the 2005 TYBA coach-pitch Spring Fling May 27-30 at the Civic Center fields.
All of all proceeds from the tournament go into the Warren County youth baseball program.
This tournament is for all age groups in coach-pitch, provided there are enough teams participating in each level. There must be at least 6 teams in each age division for that division to compete.
Divisions include: Coach-pitch 5-6 boys, coach-pitch 7-8 boys, coach-pitch super sevens, boys player pitch 9-10, coach-pitch girls softball 8-under and fast-pitch girls softball 10-under. For more information on fast-pitch, contact Mark Keith at (931) 473-1671.
All coaches must bring proof of insurance and copy of players’ birth certicicates to the check-in tent upon arrival.
Tournament Fee is $125, with awards given for first and second place. The winner of each division of eight or more teams will receive a paid berth to the Nationals Tournament in Cookeville, which will be held in July.
There is a tournament spectator fee. TYBA rules and policies will be followed for the tournament, including the TYBA rainout policy.

WWJD basketball camp
The third annual WWJD Basketball camp will be held nightly in four sessions this year, at the Viola Community Center.
Sessions will be from 6-8:30 p.m. each night. Cost is $30 per camper.
The first two sessions will be for third- through fifth-graders and will be held June 13-16 and July 25-28. Sessions three and four, for sixth- through eighth-graders, will be June 20-23 and July 18-21.
The camp promotes Christian values as well as improving self-esteem and basketball skills. Activities include fundamental instruction and individual competitions each night, as well as meeting and making new friends, Christian atmosphere and “team time,” learning to make the right choices on and off the court, and “WWJD” sportsmanship.

Security Federal Tennis Tourney
The Annual Security Federal Tennis Tournament will be held at the McMinnville Civic Center June 1-4, with awards given to winners and finalists in each division and a T-shirt given to each entrant.
Matches are the best two out of three sets, with a 12-point tiebreaker if needed.
Play begins Wednesday, June 1. The finals will be on Saturday.
Divisions will include men’s and women’s singles “A,” “B,” and “C,” and a men’s “60+” division, as well as junior singles with six divisions: Mixed 8-under, Mixed 9-10, as well as separate Boys and Girls divisions in 11-12 and separate Boys and Girls divisions in 13-14. Doubles divisions will have “A,” “B,” “C,” and “60+” classes in men’s, women’s and mixed doubles divisions.
Entry fee for the event is $15 per person for singles or doubles, except for members of the McMinnville Tennis Association, whose fee is $10 per event. No player may enter more than two events.
New optic yellow balls are required for each match, with the winner getting a new can, and the loser keeping the balls used during the match.
No entries will be taken after Sunday, May 29, and the draw will be posted on Tuesday, May 31. Players may enter by phone, but entry fee must be paid before their first match.

Sunday afternoon tennis
Beginning April 10, everyone is welcome to come out to the McMinnville outdoor courts to play tennis. Play begins each Sunday at 2 p.m., weather permitting. The Security Federal Tournament will be held June 1-4, while the Dr Pepper Tourney will be Aug. 10-13. Additionally, children’s tennis camps will be held May 23-27 and June 20-24.
Lady Pioneer Basketball Camp
Head Lady Pioneer basketball coach Ann Eades and her staff along with the Lady Pioneer basketball team will hold their annual basketball camp June 20-23 from 8-10 a.m. at the Warren County High School. The camp is for girls in grades 3-9 at a cost of $40 per camper or $30 if you have more than one family member attending camp. Fundamental instructions and individual competitions are part of this camps activities. The purpose of the camp is provide high quality instruction in the basics of basketball.
