Boyd hoops teams swept by Eagleville:11th-ranked Eagles defeat boys 79-56

The Broncos held their own with the No.11-ranked team in Class A Friday night, but fell short of a victory against Eagleville.

The Eagles entered Friday night’s matchup with Boyd with a 7-1 District 9-A record and a 17-2 season mark. The Broncos were still looking for their first district win, but after four quarters of play Boyd fell at home 79-56 as all 16 players scored for the Eagles.

Eagleville played a zone defense all night, which allowed the Eagles to sprint down court for easy transition layups. All 21 points came on fast breaks for Eagleville in the first period, but Benny Jones kept the Broncos within striking distance as he got Boyd off to a solid start with a 3-pointer. Dustin Curtis hit the boards for four points and stepped outside the arc for a 3 of his own at the 4:06 mark. Jones closed out the Broncos scoring in the first period with another 3-pointer as Boyd trailed 21-18 at the end of the period.

In the second period Eagleville scored three straight baskets over the first two-minutes of play. Tyler Hillis hit for the Broncos, but another six point run by the Eagles at the 5:47 mark helped Eagleville to extend its lead. In the final four minutes of the half, all of Boyds points came from the free-throw line as the Broncos hit just five-of-nine as the half ended with Eagleville holding a 47-26 advantage.

Playing man-to-man for the entire first half Boyd couldn’t keep up with the Eagles speed. Jimbo Porter hit a 3-pointer to start the third period for Eagleville. Curtis and Hillis hit back-to-back baskets for the Broncos as Boyd still trailed by 24 points. Boyd changed to a zone defense with 4:34 left in the period, which shut down Eagleville’s running attack. Two outside basket and a 3-pointer by the Eagles during the final two-minutes put Eagleville out in front 65-38 by the end of the period.

Boyd outscored Eagleville 18-14 in the fourth period. Curtis added seven points on the offensive glass, but the lead was beyond reach as Eagleville improved to 8-1 in the district for second place behind Forrest.

For the Broncos, Curtis netted 21 points. Hillis hit for 12, Jones had 10, Hancock had five, Jonathan Hager hit for three, Mitchell Young and James Dunlap had two points each and Lucas Majors added one point.

Leading scorers for Eagleville were Charles Steagall with 12 points. Zach Randolph and Trey Neal had 11 points each and Porter had 10 points.

Boyd will travel to Middle Tennessee Christian on Tuesday.
