WCCL Men’s Open

An open tournament for men’s softball teams will be played Friday, May 23 through Saturday, May 24 at the fairgrounds. Entry fee is $170, and the deadline to enter is May 21.

The 0-10 homer rule will be used, and teams must provide their own 44 or 47 core stamped softballs. First- through third-place tropies and an MVP will be awarded.

USSSA June Jame

A USSSA tournament for men’s D and E teams will be played Saturday, May 31, at the fairgrounds. Entry fee is $175, plus $25 if the team needs to be sanctioned. Teams must also provide their own 44 or 47 core, USSSA-stamped softballs. Deadline to register is Wednesday, May 28.

USSSA rules, including the two-homer limit, will be enforced. First- through third-place will be awarded, along with 10 all-tourneys if 10 or more teams enter.

McMinnville tennis camp

U.S.P.T.R. amd WCHS tennis coach David Dunlap will be holding a tennis camp for boys and girls ages 5-18 years old on May 26-30 at the Civic Center tennis courts.

The camp will be divided into three age brackets: 5-8, 9-11 and 12-18 years old. Cost of the camp is $85 with daily prizes being handed out to each camper. Your child will need to bring comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, a hat, sunscreen and bottled water. Tennis rackets are also required, but are available from Dunlap if needed. Lady Pioneer basketball camp

WCHS coach Ann Eades and her Lady Pioneer program will hold its annual camp June 16-19, from 8-10 a.m. each day at the Charlie Dalton Gym. The camp is for girls in grades 3-9, at a cost of $40 per camper, or $30 each for multiple campers from the same family.

The camp is designed to improve fundamentals and work on creating habits on the basketball court. A shootaway will be used to work on correct shooting form, and emphasis will also be placed on post moves, dribbling, passing, rebounding and other skills.

Freshman girls tryouts

Tryouts for the freshman girls basketball team at WCHS will be held May 27 and 28, beginning at 10 a.m., at Dalton Gym.

May Madness camp

The May Madness boys basketball camp for boys in 4th-7th grades will be at Warren County Middle School Gym on May 19, 20, and 21. Times for the camp are 3:30-5:00 each day. Instruction will be in both offensive and defensive fundamentals of basketball. The cost is 30.00 which includes a camp t-shirt. WCMS hoops tryouts

Fifth- and sixth-grade WCMS boys basketball try-outs will be Thursday May 22 from 3:30-5:00 and Friday May 23 from 1:00-2:30.

YMU Golf Tournament

The Third annual Young Men United Golf Tournament will be played Saturday, June 7, at RiverWatch Golf Course, with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Deadline to enter the four-man scramble is June 2, and entry fee is $70 per person.

White tees and Mulligans are available for $5 each, and the green fee includes golf and cart, lunch, two closest to the hole prizes and a long drive prize.

First through third will be awarded, as well as $500 cash for a hole-in-one on No. 7, and $500 more, donated by A-Christian Commercial Roofing Construction Co. (469-585-7060 or 473-1028).

Flag Football for girls

The Warren County Pioneer Youth Football League is currently conducting a survey to determine whether there is enough interest to form an all girls flag football program. It would be for girls 8 through 15 years of age, and the sign-up cost would be around $40 to cover insurance and a jersey. The league has flyers at the front desk at the Civic Center which anyone who is interested can go by and fill out, or you may call one of the phone numbers below and leave your name, phone number, and age. There will also be representatives at the locker room behind Bobby Ray Elementary School each Saturday in May from 9 a.m. until noon to answer questions and get your information. The Southern Standard’s ‘Sports Briefs’ are provided as a courtesy to our readers who wish to publicize their sporting events (tournaments, camps, sign-ups, etc.)

‘Sports Briefs’ are printed in the Standard sports section whenever space in the section allows. Announcements will run, free of charge, in the two editions leading prior to the event. Exceptions to that policy can be made, particularly when the announcement applies, for example, to not-for-profit organizations’ events or for multiple-week youth league registration periods.
