WCMS cagers sweep home finales-Girls grab 10th victory

Monday night at Warren County Middle School the Lady Pioneer varsity basketball team improved their record to 10-3 in the Central Tennessee Conference by downing Tullahoma East 32-15.

The Lady Pioneers had problems holding on to the ball in the opening period, tuning the ball over five times, which resulted in just two points for the home team. Tullahoma also had a hard time holding on to the ball with five turnovers, but baskets by Jacelyn Wells and Tristian Stephens gave the Lady Wildcats a 4-2 lead.

Bree Smith led the Lady Pioneers in the second period as she netted all seven points for Warren County. The Lady Pioneers used a full court press to hold the Lady Wildcats to two points, as Warren County took a 9-6 lead by the end of the first half.

Warren County’s defense stepped up once again in the third period allowing Natalie Rayfield to score just two baskets for Tullahoma West. Kelsie Douglas netted four points from the free throw line for Warren County. Baskets from Sarah Jacobs and Taylor Johnson put the Lady Pioneers out in front 19-10 heading into the final period.

Warren County’s aggressive play continued into the fourth quarter. Tullahoma East put five points on the board coming from Olive Caitlin and Wells. Warren County worked the ball down low to Johnson who struck for six of Warren County’s 13 points. Megan Dishman, Smith and Jacobs added one baskets each to give Warren County the victory.

Smith led all scores with 11 points for the Lady Pioneers. Johnson hit for nine, Jacobs and Douglas added four points each. Dishman and Morgan Frye added two points each.

Saturday the Lady Pioneers picked up a win over Franklin County South. Warren County defeated the Lady Trojans 35-26 as Smith led the charge with 15 points.

South jumped out in front 13-7 in the first period. Smith hit for five of the Lady Pioneers seven points, including a 3-pointer. Both teams struggled on offense in the second period. The Lady Trojans had one point in the period, while Smith scored three for the Lady Pioneers. By the end of the first half Warren County trailed 14-10.

The second half belonged to Warren County. The Lady Pioneers posted 14 points in the third quarter with the help of a eight points effort from Caroline McKinley. Franklin County put nine points on the board, but the Lady Pioneers took a 24-23 lead into the final period.

Warren County held Franklin County to three points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Pioneers struck for 11, with nine of those coming from the free throw line. Johnson added a basket to help Warren County to a nine point win.

Smith had 15, McKinley added 14, Johnson hit for three, Douglas had two and Allison Connor added one point.
