Heart care: It’s up to you

Do you need to lower your cholesterol and find ways to eat healthier? Perhaps you want to lower your cancer risks or try to lose some weight. If so, then you should register for the Heartcare program.

The University of Tennessee Extension is offering the Heartcare program to help the citizens of Warren County take better care of their health. The program includes videos, group discussion, and hands-on instruction. Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent, Hilda Lytle, is the course instructor.

The Heartcare program is scheduled for Feb. 5 ,12 , 19 and 26. The class meets at 9 a.m. in the Magnolia Room of the Warren County Administrative Offices. It is open to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. The class will last approximately 45 minutes to allow participants to attend during their lunch hour. The cost of the class is $10.00 for all four sessions. Participants need to plan to participate in all sessions.

The following is a brief outline of the subject matter of each session.

Session 1 ‘ “Eating to Live, Living to Eat”

‘ Identify high saturated fat problem areas

‘ Find low-fat substitutions

‘ Encourage participants to set personal goals

Session 2 ‘ “De-Fat Your Diet”

‘ Identify high sources of fat

‘ Identify and consumer more high fiber foods

‘ Set personal goals related to the class

Session 3 ‘ “Low-fat Eating in a High-fat World”

‘ How to eat low fat meals when eating out

‘ Substitute low-fat snacks

‘ Set personal goals related to the class

Session 4 ‘ “Tomorrow’s Kitchen”

‘ Shop for heart-friendly packaged foods

‘ Modify recipes

‘ Healthy cooking tips concerning meats

‘ Set short and long-term goals for healthy eating

Anyone interested in participating in this heart-healthy program should pre-register at the Warren County Extension Office by Feb. 4. For more information, please call 473-8484.
