First United Methodist offers place for singles-Initial meeting set for Sunday

YOUNG
For singles who would like to meet other singles in a setting other than a bar, First United Methodist Church has an answer.

Church members are organizing a Christian Singles Fellowship Group and this Sunday is the first meeting.

With the Super Bowl matchup between the New York Giants and undefeated New England Patriots providing entertainment, the singles group will meet at 5 p.m. at First United Methodist’s fellowship hall. There will be finger food and other activities planned to keep the night lively for those not interested in the Super Bowl.

‘I’ve heard a number of singles say it’s hard to meet people,’ said Debra Young, one of the group organizers. ‘This is not a dating game or hook-up service. It’s like an outreach for the community. We’d like to have some good, clean fun and have enjoyable monthly outings.’

Young says the singles group is open to anyone who is single, regardless of what church they attend, or don’t attend.

‘This is a need we feel has been overlooked in our community for quite some time and we want to do something about it,’ she said.

During the winter, a trip to the bowling alley and a pizza night out have been mentioned as possible monthly group activities. Once warmer weather arrives, the opportunities expand and could include everything from nature hikes to picnic lunches.

The first meeting will include a brief introduction before participants watch the big game. There will also be a gift grab and attendees are asked to bring a $5 gift that’s appropriate for both men and women. Future outings will also be discussed during the inaugural meeting. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to bring a single friend.
