Centertown, Eastside split in 5th & 6th hoops-Melton leads Lady Warriors
Fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball action at Centertown Tuesday night saw the Lady Warriors down the Lady Bulldogs of Eastside 36-29 as Alexis Melton led Centertown with 18 points.
Melton was unstoppable in the opening period as she hit for all eight of the Lady Warriors’ points. Eastside put five points on the board with baskets from Lindsey Skinner and Natalie Mabe.
Centertown’s Brianna Noble and Madison Walkup scored one basket each to open up the second period. The Lady Bulldogs’ Abbi Reyes scored five unanswered points, which would be all Eastside would score in the period. Noble closed out the half for the Lady Warriors with a basket in the paint as Centertown held a 14-10 lead at the break.
Eastside continued to struggle on both ends of the floor in the third period. But the Lady Bulldogs hit for nine points as they tried to close the gap. Centertown ran the floor and continued to stay hot as the Lady Warriors posted 14 points. Melton hit for six in the period and Walkup added a pair of basket to help give their team a 28-19 lead by the end of the period.
In the final period Eastside held Centertown to eight points. The Lady Bulldogs tried to make a charge as Reyes, Skinner and Kateland Moore combined for 10 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Warriors held on for the victory.
For Centertown, Melton had 18 points, followed by Vickers and Walkup with six apiece. Noble had four and Madison Todd added two points.
Reyes had 16 for the Lady Bulldogs. Skinner had seven, Moore added four and Mabe had two points.
