WCMS varsity teams top Coffee County

Warren County Middle School’s varsity basketball teams improved to 2-0 in Central Tennessee Conference play Monday night, sweeping Coffee County in both boys’ and girls’ action.

In the opening game, Bree Smith led the way with 14 points as the Lady Pioneers defeated the Lady Raiders 37-21. Smith scored five of her team’s eight points in the first quarter, while Caroline McKinley added the other three to give WCMS an early 8-3 lead which would swell to 22-15 by the end of the third quarter.

McKinley finished with seven points, while Taylor Johnson scored all six of her total in the second half.

Coffee County’s girls were led by Tori Taylor, who had seven, while Taryn Tate and Missy Jones scored four apiece.

Any hopes of the Red Raiders taking a split away from Monday’s doubleheader were quickly dashed, as the Pioneers erupted for 32 first-half points on the way to a 61-25 rout.

Led by Casey Locke’s 14 points, the Pioneers also benefited from 13 each by Jacob Reagan and Hunter Daniel, who hit three 3-pointers on the night. WCMS carried a 12-6 lead out of the first quarter, and went up 32-14 by halftime. Daniel and Andy McElroy hit 3-pointers in the third, helping their club take a 48-21 advantage into the game’s final period.

Defensively, the Pioneers held Coffee County to just seven field goals, with no more than two in any period of play. Dillon Harris was the Raiders’ top scorer with six points, while Jonathan Henegar added five and Aaron Ruhl had four.
